Sedation isn’t just comfort — it’s better treatment.
Conscious sedation is the safe, effective use of medication to relieve anxiety, increase relaxation and reduce pain — for dental and medical procedures alike. Here’s what it’s actually trying to achieve, and why it works so well.
What we’re aiming for
Every sedation we deliver is working towards the same six goals, whatever the procedure.
Maximise your comfort
Relaxed, calm, and at ease throughout — not just pain-free.
Minimise anxiety
Less discomfort and dread going in, and less to remember afterwards.
Support surgical success
A calmer, more cooperative patient helps your clinician do their best work.
Minimise recovery time
Short-acting medication means you’re back to yourself quickly.
Keep treatment cost-effective
No hospital stay, no operating theatre, minimal time off work.
Do all of this safely
Every goal above, delivered within a fully compliant, monitored framework.
Why it works so well
Procedural sedation uses lower levels of sedative medication than general anaesthesia, which is where most of its advantages come from.
Safer, with fewer side effects
Because sedation needs less medication than a general anaesthetic, the risks that come with a general anaesthetic — airway injury, cardiopulmonary complications, nerve injury from positioning — are avoided. Postoperative nausea and vomiting is significantly less common, and because you keep moving naturally during the procedure, the risk of deep vein thrombosis is greatly reduced too.
A genuinely better experience
Most patients have little or no memory of the procedure itself, no recollection of pain, and can go home soon afterwards. It’s also why so many people who’ve had both choose sedation again at their next procedure — and why healthcare professionals favour it too: better cooperation, and the convenience of treating you in their own practice rather than an operating theatre.
Better value, too
No hospital stay, no operating theatre time, and a much faster return to normal life all add up — sedation delivered outside a hospital setting is consistently more cost-effective, with fewer of the complications that drive costs up elsewhere.
